I’ve had some requests for themes to go with food bars. Probably because it’s fall and getting close to Christmas and we all love get-togethers. One that I think is nice to do is a potato bar and building an event around that.
Going to leave my Spud-tacular theme ideas with you today. At one time they were on the website years ago, but reposting for those of you who need the info.
Potato Theme Concept

The event themes on the website can be used for showers, parties, women’s ministry retreats and activities, or church functions. Each theme will have one or several possible spiritual applications. I give you lots of info and ideas—You pick just a few to enhance your event. More ideas can be used for showers and parties, but less is always more for ministry events.

Simple Decorating
- Tray filled with potato related items
- Line tray with pretty dishtowel or potato sack.
- Place a variety of potatoes (Russet, White, Red, Sweet Potato, etc.)
- Use a mixing bowl to hold some of the potatoes and place some on the tray itself.
- Place a couple potato peelers.
- Place salt and pepper shakers.
- To keep it really simple, use your potato bar or potato food dishes as decoration.
Ice Breakers
Hot Potato
Use a Hot Potato game to have every person say their name or a describing word about themselves when they are “caught” with the potato. You can also have them do silly things when they are “caught with the hot potato” such as sing a line of a particular song, etc.
Mr. Potato Face Race
Have two Mr. (or Mrs.) Potato toys. Have races to see who can put all the pieces in the head first.
Potato Sack Races
Use only for younger or more energetic groups!

- Potato basket – Fill with potato chips, shoestring potatoes, box of mashed potatoes, 2 baking potatoes, 2 sweet potatoes, potato peeler, potato scrubber, a few potato recipes or a potato recipe book.
- Sweet potato pie (from a local bakery or homemade)
Just for Fun
Photo Op
Take photos of your ladies wearing mustaches like Mr. Potato Head or big lips like Mrs. Potato Head. Purchase or make your props.
Tater Tot Pageant
Having a potato bar during an event honoring mothers and having small girls present? Have a Tater Tot Pageant. You don’t have to give out prizes or anything. Little girls just like dressing up and parading around and we love watching them have fun:)
Recipe Share
Have everyone bring in a favorite recipe for any type of potato dish and exchange the recipes. Use a bowl or something and have everyone choose one upon leaving.

Q. What do you call a baby potato?
A. A small fry.
Q. Why did the potato cross the road?
A. He saw a fork up ahead.
